Engler-Bunte-Institute, Combustion Technology

The Engler-Bunte-Institute (EBI) with its Division of Combustion Technology (EBI-VBT) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology is one of the major institutes within the department of Chemical Engineering at the KIT. The main research areas are aimed at phenomenological, theoretical and applied studies concerning combustion devices or more generally reacting flows and the related peripheral equipment.

Team role and expertise in the project

KIT is the main partner for the analysis of the fundamentals of the innovative system for the simultaneous compression and dissolution of CO2 in a solvent (e.g. water, tetrabutylammonium bromide). KIT will work on a first-of-a-kind compressor with MTM, modified with internal liquid solvent injection. KIT will use for this task specific benches in order to analyse the dense solvent spray characteristics and the coalescence process as the pressure is increased due to the dissolution of CO2. Optical methods like PDA and PIV will be used in a dedicated test rig, in order to get reference data of the process. Detailed numerical modelling of the 2 phase flow will accompany these activities, providing better insight in the process and the influence of operating parameters and thus, allowing a subsequent optimization process of the tailored designed compressor/dissolutor together with MTM.
